About GutBeautyBody | Our Story
We are not health bloggers who had it all figured out from the start. We’re Shawn (56) and Wendy (52), married and together for 30 years. Parents to Alex (28), Sam (24), and Sebastian (8). We were the kind of people who used to think a salad was punishment. What changed us wasn’t watching a show or reading a study.
It was our daughter.
The Moment Everything Shifted
In 1996, our daughter got her first period at 9-years-old.
That stopped us in our tracks.
The doctor said it was nothing serious, but also wanted to do a full physical, including a pelvic exam – just in case. Watching your 9-year-old daughter endure that is something no parent forgets. And the fact that I didn’t even stop her from doing the exam still bothers me.
Her pediatrician, the person we trusted to care for our children, had no explanation. She gave no suggestion as to what caused it other than saying “girls get their period earlier and earlier”.
I didn’t get my period until I was 16. Every other woman in my family was a late bloomer. This was shocking to my husband and I.
We couldn’t shrug it off. Something about it felt too early, too young, and too important to ignore.
So I started researching on Yahoo. We didn’t even have Google back then.
That moment sent us down the road of looking harder at what we were eating, what ingredients were in our food, how animals were raised, how gut health connects to overall wellness, and how small choices can add up over time.
My best guess, based on weeks of research, was that the antibiotics in our dairy and meat were causing hormonal changes in our bodies.
So, we threw out all of our food and changed the way we cooked. I tried different ways of eating. I learned how to make gluten-free, sugar-free, organic, and healthier whole-food versions of meals and snacks that our family would still want to eat.
Six months later, Alex’s period stopped. It didn’t come back until she was 12 1/2. Still young, but a more acceptable age.
We’re not making medical claims here. We never do.
But this experience cracked something open for us.
It made us stop trusting our healthcare providers to have all the answers. To say NO or get a 2nd opinion and then form our own.
To stop blindly putting things into our bodies just because the price was right. Not all chicken is the same. Not all cheese is the same.
I became obsessed with studying nutrition, trying different diet styles to see what we each responded to best, and reading each and every food label we bring into our lives.
Since then, my husband and kids refer to me as our family doctor. They’ve even had their friends ask me for help during their teen years.
I know each of us better than any doctor ever will. And almost every ailment or issue we have with our bodies can be traced back to our gut health. Once you realize that, you have an obligation to learn and do better for yourself and your family. And that’s exactly what’s happened with us.

Building a Business to Build a Life
While we were learning to eat differently, we were also learning to work differently.
Shawn and I spent more than 20 years building businesses online, creating content, working with people, leading teams, and figuring things out on our own. We didn’t follow a blueprint. There wasn’t one.
In December 2008, we joined Scentsy. We built that business together with a global team we are still incredibly proud of. It changed our lives, gave us opportunities we never expected, and opened the door to everything that came next. We built an international business from the library Wi-Fi and a negative budget.
It gave us more than income. It also gave us travel.
It gave us the ability to show our kids the world rather than just tell them about it. In 2016, we sold everything we owed and took our then-teenagers to travel the world full-time, got pregnant along the way and have been to 39 countries on 4 continents.
We’ve raised kids through different stages of life, lived in RVs, stayed in rentals around the world, cooked in tiny kitchens, shopped in foreign grocery stores, at local cuisine all over the world, and learned that health has to work wherever you are.
That is a big reason GutBeautyBody exists. Coming back to the states in March 2026, we found ourselves gaining weight rapidly while not changing our diet. The food, city walkability, and lifestyle here were causing our health to decline. We realized we had to not only take control of our health quickly, but we should help others pay attention to. We’ve kept our health and wellness journey to ourselves…until now.
39 Countries and Counting
We’ve traveled to 39 countries as a family, full-time, since 2016.
Not resort travel. Real travel. The kind where you walk into the jungle to catch a train, survive bus drivers who treat speed limits as suggestions, and find yourself eating something you can’t identify at a morning market in a city you can barely pronounce.
No trip shaped us more than Sri Lanka.
We arrived skeptical. The smells were overpowering in every way. The first few weeks were a lot, the sounds, the colors, the aggressive street vendors, the red-eyed locals chewing betel leaf, the chaos of getting anywhere on time. By the time our 30 days were up, we were relieved to leave.
Then something funny happened. The farther we got from Sri Lanka, the more we missed it.
We had never tried Indian food before that trip. Now it’s one of our favorite cuisines on earth. We have lifelong friends we met at Galle Fort, a local family who welcomed us into their home for a week. That trip taught us more about food, community, and slowing down than any book ever could.
That pattern repeated itself across 39 countries. Not just the food. The way people live.
Seniors in Thailand, Greece, and Mexico don’t retire and disappear. They work until they can’t work. You don’t see scooters and walkers lined up outside restaurants. You don’t see the same level of obesity. People walk. People cook. People sit outside with their neighbors. Life is slower and intentional.
When we’d come back to the States, we’d see beautiful sidewalks with no one walking on them. Drive-throughs with lines wrapped around the building. Everyone moving fast, but most people not moving their bodies.
Once you see the difference, you can’t unsee it.
Why We Built GutBeautyBody
Because we couldn’t find what we were looking for anywhere else.
Most health content is written by people in their 30s, for people in their 30s. The advice doesn’t account for a body that has lived a full life, hormones that have shifted, or the specific ways everything changes after 50. We wanted something honest. Something practical. Something from a real couple who has actually lived it, not someone selling perfection.
So we built it. We took 19 years of trial, error, research, and eating our way across 39 countries and refined it into something we could share.
Gut, Beauty & Body is our ongoing documentation of what’s working, for our gut health, our energy, our beauty, our sleep, our weight, our nutrition, and our enjoyment of life.
We focus on those six areas because they moved the needle the most for us.
We don’t sell programs. We don’t push supplements. We share what we know, what we’ve tried, and what we’ve learned from paying close attention for a long time.
Take what makes sense for you, and leave the rest.
We’re practitioners. Not gurus. There’s a difference.
Over time, we refined everything we learned into what we now call The Simple Six: six foundational areas that determine how you feel after 50. Gut health, nutrition, beauty, energy, weight, and sleep. Simple enough to remember. Powerful enough to change everything.
